Carver vs YOW: compare the boards, not just the brands
Carver vs YOW: which board to try first, how CX, C7, Meraki and Legasee differ, and what 64 catalogue boards reveal about dimensions and price.
Where to start
For a first surfskate with several uses, I'd start with Carver CX, following Carver's own beginner recommendation. If you want a spring system for surf practice, compare Carver C7 with YOW Meraki. For trips that include pushing with your foot, add YOW Legasee. Then choose the whole board by its dimensions, how it feels in a demo, and the current local price. Resin CX, Greenroom C7, and Coxos Meraki are useful starting points.
This guide compares 31 Carver and 33 YOW boards from the 200-board SurfSkate.app catalogue, using specifications checked on 9 September 2026 and the manufacturer guidance linked below. Boards from other brands using Carver trucks are outside these totals. The recommendations are product comparisons, not personal riding tests. Prices are references for the listed versions; check the current offer when buying.
Which range should you look at first?
First board for different uses: Carver CX
I’d begin with Resin CX if you want to learn, carve, and use one board for different sessions. Carver’s FAQ recommends CX for many new riders and names the 31” Resin as an all-round starting point. CX steers through polyurethane bushings, the elastic parts that resist movement and help it return towards centre.
For a lower board budget, the Triton Astral uses CX too, with a reference price of €182.99 / US$199. It is shorter than Resin at 29” and has a 15.25” wheelbase. I’d try those two sizes before paying extra for a graphic or collaboration.
Surf practice with a spring system: Carver C7 or YOW Meraki
Carver positions C7 for flowing surf-training turns. Its front truck has a spring-loaded swinging arm, adding a second steering axis. YOW Meraki is another spring-system option; Coxos is a useful board to compare with Carver’s Greenroom C7.
For these two, I’d make standing space and a demo the deciding steps. Think about the movements you intend to practise, and ask a surf coach what they want you to work on. The detailed Carver CX vs C7 guide covers Carver’s internal choice; this comparison focuses on the boards to put alongside YOW.
Lighter-rider spring option: YOW Meraki S4
YOW’s official FAQ explains that S4 and S5 refer to 4 mm and 5 mm spring thickness. It usually recommends S4 below 50 kg and S5 above 50 kg, while allowing either system on either side according to preference and experience. This is setup guidance rather than a load limit.
Hossegor Grom brings S4 into the shortlist on a 29” board. If you are buying for a child, the parents’ guide adds the practical fitting and supervision questions. Confirm which spring system the board includes before ordering.
Pushing and cruising: YOW Legasee
YOW’s Legasee description combines pushing with carving and pumping. It is a bushing-based system in a separate surf-cruiser range. I’d include Calypso if your normal outing involves pushing between places as well as making turns.
Calypso is 28” × 8”, with 60 mm wheels and a reference price of €195 / US$208.95. That is a noticeably different board from the wider Meraki examples below. Choose this range for its intended use; if you want Meraki, compare Meraki-equipped boards directly.
Dimensions and prices across the two brands
The Carver selection contains 21 CX-only boards, five C7-only, and five with a CX/C7 choice. Each selectable board counts once. YOW has 21 S5, three S4, and nine Legasee boards.
Dimensions are available for all 64. Euro prices cover 23 of 31 Carvers and all 33 YOWs; US dollar prices cover all 64. Missing prices are excluded from the statistics.
| Measure | Carver | YOW |
|---|---|---|
| Board records | 31 | 33 |
| Deck length range | 27.5"–37" (31/31) | 28"–40" (33/33) |
| Deck width range | 9.25"–10.875" (31/31) | 7.5"–10.5" (33/33) |
| Recorded wheelbase range | 15"–21.5" (31/31) | 13"–26" (33/33) |
| EUR price range | €182.99–€256.99 (23/31) | €185–€329.90 (33/33) |
| Median recorded EUR price | €238.99 (23/31) | €299.90 (33/33) |
| USD price range | $199–$279 (31/31) | $159.95–$249.95 (33/33) |
The median is the middle listed price. Because Carver has missing euro prices and YOW mixes Meraki with the cheaper Legasee range, specific board pairs are more useful for budgeting than the difference between brand medians.
Wheelbase is the recorded spacing between the trucks. Compare it alongside usable standing space and the manufacturer’s measurement convention. The wheelbase guide explains this in detail, while the truck-types guide introduces the different steering mechanisms.
Six boards for a practical comparison
The names below identify the truck version as well as the board. They give you a starting list for a shop visit or a price comparison.
| Board | System | Length × width | Wheelbase | EUR / USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carver Triton Astral | CX | 29" × 9.75" | 15.25" | €182.99 / $199 |
| Carver Resin CX | CX | 31" × 9.875" | 17" | €219.99 / $239 |
| Carver Greenroom C7 | C7 | 34" × 10" | 18" | €256.99 / $279 |
| YOW Coxos | Meraki S5 | 31" × 10.25" | 18" | €299.90 / $239.95 |
| YOW Hossegor Grom | Meraki S4 | 29" × 9.5" | 17" | €269.90 / $219.95 |
| YOW Calypso Surf Cruiser | Legasee | 28" × 8" | 15" | €195 / $208.95 |
Resin CX versus Coxos S5: a first interbrand pair
I’d put these together if you are undecided between CX and Meraki. Both decks are 31”, but Coxos is wider and has an extra inch of wheelbase. Resin’s listed wheels are 69 mm; Coxos has 66 mm wheels. Try the whole board, including where your feet sit, rather than attributing every difference to the front truck.
The reference prices are €219.99 versus €299.90, yet US$239 versus US$239.95. For a euro buyer that makes price a larger part of this decision; for a US buyer the listed prices are nearly equal. Compare current offers in your own currency.
Greenroom C7 versus Coxos S5: choosing a spring board
Both list an 18” wheelbase. Greenroom is 34” long and 10” wide; Coxos is 31” long and 10.25” wide. I’d check which deck gives you the standing space you want for surf practice, and whether the extra length is convenient to carry and store.
If you can try both, use the same appropriate practice area and the same shoes. Note how comfortably you start a turn, link turns, and stop. A coach can help separate a setup preference from a movement you are still learning.
Astral versus Hossegor: compact CX or S4
Astral is the lower-priced choice here, while Hossegor brings YOW’s lighter-rider spring option. Both are 29”, but Astral is 9.75” wide with a 15.25” wheelbase; Hossegor is 9.5” wide with 17” between trucks.
I’d use this pair when compact size matters, then check steering resistance and foot placement in person. The catalogue lists weights of 3.1 kg and 3.48 kg respectively, which is useful if you expect to carry the board regularly.
Calypso: prioritising pushing between places
Calypso’s 8” width makes it the narrowest of these examples. Put your feet on that deck before deciding whether the smaller package suits you. If your route includes public transport or carrying the board indoors, also try picking it up and holding it as you would on the journey.
Legasee’s pushing-and-carving brief is the reason to include it. For sessions centred on a spring system, keep the comparison with C7 and Meraki instead.
Adjustment: what you can change
Meraki’s spring mechanism is not tuned by tightening its kingpin. YOW warns against doing this to reduce movement. Its FAQ does describe other ways to alter the feel: compatible bushings and pivot cups, and a different wheelbase where the deck and mounting arrangement permit.
Current S4 and S5 springs are not interchangeable. If you want the other spring system, ask YOW which assembly is appropriate rather than ordering a spring by thickness alone.
Carver documents a spring adjustment for C7 and setup guidance for CX bushings. Follow the instructions for the exact truck. I’d ask a shop to explain the permitted adjustments before buying, especially if rider weight is a concern or you plan to share the board.
Compare the whole cost
YOW’s catalogue euro ranges are €185–€195 for nine Legasee boards, €269.90–€299.90 for three S4 boards, and €299.90–€329.90 for 21 S5 boards. Carver Triton CX starts at a reference €182.99. The budget guide covers other brands if those prices exceed your limit.
Before paying, check the model year, selected trucks, wheels, and delivered price. Ask about replacement parts and whether an outdoor trial affects returns. A ready-assembled board makes the initial purchase simpler, but the seller should still be able to explain what is included.
For a used board, ask about modifications and check its condition with someone competent. Keep the receipt and model details for later parts enquiries. The first-board buying guide expands that checklist.
FAQ
Which should I choose first, Carver or YOW?
For a first board with several uses, start with CX, as Carver recommends for many new riders. For spring-based surf practice, compare C7 with Meraki. Include Legasee for pushing and cruising. Choose the board’s size and current local offer after narrowing down the system.
Is YOW better than Carver for surf training?
Both have options worth trying: Carver positions C7 for flowing surf practice, and YOW has Meraki boards with S4 and S5 springs. Choose with the movements you want to practise in mind, ideally with a coach. This comparison does not measure improvements in surfing.
Can I adjust the YOW Meraki spring tension?
YOW says not to tune the spring mechanism by tightening its kingpin. You can change the feel with compatible bushings and pivot cups, and with wheelbase where the deck and mounting arrangement permit. Current S4 and S5 springs are not interchangeable. Follow the instructions for your version.
Is Carver cheaper than YOW?
Compare the same currency and the specific boards. Resin CX is listed at €219.99 and US$239; Coxos S5 at €299.90 and US$239.95. The euro gap is substantial, while the dollar prices are close. These are catalogue references; check the current delivered price.
Can I put Carver trucks on a YOW deck?
Check the exact combination with the manufacturer: mounting pattern, truck width, hardware, risers, and wheel clearance throughout the turn. Buying a ready-assembled board is the simpler starting point if you are unsure about those checks.
